“This System will provide displaying the university Campus two and three dimensions maps” Said Dr. Jasem Al-Ali

“GIS combines both the spatial and descriptive information to achieve certain goals”

S abah Al-Salem University City is a developmental project that is under focus to complete this expected academic edifice. The stakeholders of this project pursue providing the most advanced technologies including the application of Geographic Information system (GIS).

“Sabah Al-Salem university City is one of the leading projects. It includes many multi-floors buildings plus the infrastructure network. This project will be managed by different departments including the university top management, utility department, maintenance department and security & safety department” Dr. Jasem Al-Ali, SSUC GIS consultant assured in his interview with Al-Anba Newspaper “Those departments will require very accurate information and data to manage that university city, and GIS is the most advanced technology that connect location to information. All the concerned authorities of different duties and divisions will get the benefit of this information for perfectly managing the university”.

“GIS is a system based on combining both the spatial and descriptive information to achieve certain goals which include establishing SSUC geographic information system through comprehensive and integrated database that supplies GIS application, considering the future expansions and developments of this system to cover all SSUC current and future components”.

“Through Geographic Information System, data can be analyzed, updated and displayed through the applications or online. Such systems will also allow displaying the university campus two and three dimensions maps to show its basic components including multi-floored buildings and colleges, and other constructions. Additionally, such plans will be able to image work progress stages starting from from the design stages to the completion and operation stages” he added.

“SSUC geographic information system (GIS) is based on different technologies, the most important is (ArcGIS) produced by ESRI American company that supports developing different software for the different operating systems, as well as online applications. The other technologies being used in this project include those provided by (Schneider Company) i.e. ArcFM that is used for developing and administrating the university campus networks of infrastructure such as water and electricity. Meanwhile, there will be different software called GDi for administrating telecommunication networks”. Dr. Al-Ali stated.

[blockquote“The aforesaid technologies will satisfy both the individual and communal requirements, as they will be available for all for certain applications. In this context, ArcGIS Server should be referred as it shall supports online display of construction drawings of the university campus components, as they can be browsed through the free online browsers”.[/blockquote]

“Through using (Archibus), the university will be able to administrate its assets and utilities as well as to organize the movement of cadres with their belongings from one place to another inside the university campus, plus organizing processes of the university utility operation and maintenance”.

“All of these technologies, which meanly depend on (ArcGIS Server) and (Oracle 11g), will correlate and intervene through central database includes all data related to the Geographic Information System of the university campus”.

“This software can be also used by the students as the mobiles will be connected to GIS upon arriving at the university campus to enable them reaching the classrooms. It can be also used in case of emergencies and to easily find the empty parking”.

Finally, he emphasized that: “This system has never been used by any other university, whether locally or internationally, where Sabah Al-Salem University City will take the precedence of using this application that is considered as the backbone for information in Sabah Al-Salem University City”.
